Our senses are much more powerful then we may think. The Kiki and Bouba study was first done a while ago by Wolfgang Köhler, where he had one sharp starry shape next to a round and “bubbly” shape. Then asked people to name each of them, either Kiki, our Bouba, and surprisingly 95% of people named the boulby shape Bouba and the sharp and pointy shape Kiki. I was very interested about this and decided it would be cool to test myself. I did the test with my classmates and family.
Out of the 20 people interviewed, all 20 named it correctly. This may seem inaccurate because of the small sample size, but it still demonstrates our incredible ability to relate previous experiences to solve this problem. After reading more about it, I found that the reason people are more prone to pick Kiki for the sharp shape is because “K” has a much sharper and hard sound to it, then the “B” in bouba, bouba just sounds more bubbly and round, you make oval and circular shapes with your lips and mouth when saying it. While when saying Kiki, you stop quickly and sharply.
Since my first results were not very different and everyone had the same ideas, I decided to find my own example of Kiki and Bouba with different objects or shapes, and what I found were an egg and a lemon. I then proposed the same question to my friends and family. This may seem much harder, as they are both shaped almost identically the same, but still out of the 20 people interviewed, 19 of them said the egg was Bouba and the Lemon was Kiki. This was amazing to me, because they had no biased opinion at all, and to some people i said Kiki and Bouba, while to others I said Bouba and Kiki, when introducing the names of the shapes, but this did not influence their choice at all. I also inquired my brother, as he was the only one to say Kiki to be the egg, and after asking him he admitted that the nay reason he said that is because he thought it was a trick question and wanted to say the opposite of what I thought he would say.
There was no explanation as to why people chose the egg to be Bouba and the lemon to be Kiki, but I believe that its because people think of a lemon to have a sharp and bitter taste. While an egg has a soft and simple taste, just like Bouba. Another reason might be because the lemon is covered in sharp little spikes or studs in its peel, while an egg is perfectly round, much like the shapes of the spiky “Kiki” and “Bouba”.
